Anahuac Main Refuge/Visitor Information Station

Skillern Tract (East Bay Bayou)

To the Headquarters / Visitor Center from Interstate 10

The Refuge Headquarters and Visitor Center is located two miles south of Interstate 10 and 4 miles north of the city of Anahuac. If you are coming to the Visitor Center from the west or east on the interstate, you can take Exit 810 and turn south. The facility will be on the right (west) side of the road.

The Main Refuge is located about 20 miles southeast of the Visitor Center. To get there from the Visitor Center, you can take FM 563 south to Anahuac, then turn east on TX 61 to get to FM 562. Continue south on FM 562 for 8 miles from the intersection with it and TX 65 to a fork in the road. Bear to the left onto FM 1985 and drive about 5 miles to the main refuge entrance gate on the south side of the road. Once you pass through the gate, it is another 3 miles to the Visitor Information Station

To the Main Refuge from
Interstate 10

The Main Refuge is located about 20 miles southeast of the Visitor Center. To get there from the Interstate 10, Follow I-10 E to Wallisville. Take exit 812 from Interstate 10.  Take TX 61 (turns into FM 562 S) for 12 miles from the intersection to a fork in the road. Bear to the left onto FM 1985 and drive about 5 miles to the main refuge entrance gate on the south side of the road. Once you pass through the gate, it is another 3 miles to the Visitor Information Station

To the Main Refuge from Winnie or High Island

For those coming from Winnie, go south on TX 124 for 10 miles to FM 1985. Coming from High Island, go north on TX 124 for 9 miles to FM 1985. Turn west on to FM 1985. The Skillern Tract will be on the left (south) side of the road after 3 miles. Continue on for another 7 miles to the main refuge entrance gate. Turn left (south) on the entrance road and continue on for 3 miles to the Visitor Information Station. When coming from High Island, look to the northwest from the top of the Intracoastal Bridge for an elevated view of the refuge.

To get the Skillern Tract (East Bay Bayou Tract) from the Main Refuge

To get to the Skillern Tract, head east on FM 1985 from the main refuge entrance gate for 7 miles. The entrance will be on the right (south) side of the road.

 

NOTE: The East Unit entrance is about 1 mile west of the Skillern Tract entrance. It is restricted access to hunters during specific seasons and other individuals with permission. Please do not enter through that gate if it is open because you may get locked in!
