East Unit Hunting Reservation System

Welcome to the Anahuac NWR Hunting Reservation System

 

The first reservations will be taken on October 19 and 20 at 7 PM for youth and veteran weekend (October 26 and 27).  Then the season opens that following Saturday (November 2).  Details can be found on our brochure, but basically the reservations are seven days before the day of the reservation at 7 PM. 

 

The 2024-2025 Waterfowl Hunting Brochure has been published online and will be distributed along with the East Unit Annual Permit. ​​

Notice:  The Annual Permit fee has increased from $40 to $48 and the daily access fees have changed from $10 to $12.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

The Refuge will be participating in the following events and have openings for anyone who would like to volunteer with us.  RSVP to Stepha​nie Martinez @ 409-267-3337 x142 is required to volunteer.  If you don't wish to volunteer, please come on by and say hello. 

 

October 12th: Nurture Nature Festival, Baytown.  We will have a booth and pass out brochures and answer questions about the refuge. We'll have a craft for the kids and giveaways.  No entry or parking fees; 10am - 4pm https://baytown.org/904/Nurture-Nature-Festival.

 

October 19th: Bike Around the Bay: Refuge provides 2 breakpoints: HQ and the RV sites. Volunteers cut up fruit, pass out snacks, mix Gatorade, etc. Hours for volunteering are Saturday only (we are breakpoint #1) approximately 7am-10am, FYI for traffic this weekend: Bike riders will be on the east side of the bay on Saturday, sleep overnight in Galveston and ride back on Sunday via Hwy 146. https://galvbay.org/event/2024-bike-around-the-bay-and-bike-around-the-island/.

 

October 26th: Fishing Day, Anahuac Refuge, hours 9am-12pm. Volunteers help bait hooks, take fish off lines, pass out poles, nets, etc.: various jobs related to fishing and crabbing.  Free t-shirt.  Please bring your own lunch. 

 

October/November TBD: Monarch Tagging, Anahuac Refuge, hours 7am-9am. We will tag monarchs when they come through. This is an unknown date. We will watch for them to be migrating through, and when we get a cold morning, we will go check to see if they're resting in the trees/bushes and tag them. November 16th: Butterfly Garden Workday 9am-11:30am. Help trim butterfly garden plants, collect seeds and get it ready for the winter. Drinks and snacks provided.

WEEKLY WINNING PHOTOS

Congratulations to Mike Fahey and all the weekly winners of the 2024 Photo Contest!  This year, we received an incredible array of stunning submissions capturing the beauty and diversity of the inhabitants of Anahuac NWR.  Thank you for your passion and talent in capturing the essence of Anahuac's wildlife. Your contributions inspire us all to cherish and protect this rich habitat.

All photos were taken at the refuge between March 10 and May 25, 2024. A “Photo of the Week” was chosen each week, and the winning image was chosen from the 11 “Photo of the Week” winners.

Wildlife refuges are specifically created to preserve habitat for wildlife.  Anahuac NWR is no different, but remains accessible for a variety of uses.  Walking trails, driving loops, boardwalks, fishing piers, and boat ramps are available across the refuge.
